Event Details

During this event we teach people how to make Taiwanese foods~ We had the event during Chinese New Years and it was a lot of fun~ Turn out was really good and people were generally very excited and people got fed and learned!

Comments and Changes

The event has been previously been held in McCormick Country Kitchen, but this year we moved it to Next House Country Kitchen. The motivation behind this was that more of exec lived in Next and McCormick was a little more inconvenient to get into. However, this backfired quite a bit as most of the cookware and utensils were in McCormick and we were unable to accurately anticipate what things we needed to move from McCormick (i.e. we forgot to bring cups for the boba).

Additionally, we underestimated the tasks that needed to be completed for prep and could have better given out/planned prep activities.

In general, recommend better planning (aka - reading the wiki beforehand) and organization. Perhaps this also arose from the fact that both captains were freshmen and perhaps underestimated preparation that needed to occur. (In the future, we should try not to have more dishes than captains!)

Layout

Cooking prep was slightly disorganized, but consisted of having two people cover five tables with trash bags (safety and cleanliness). Some ingredients prepped occurred the day before for the meat tangyuan. Prep for ingredients for the scallion pancakes and boba occurred during morning prep. Prep was a little behind especially since there was issues with the guest list (could not find a comprehensive list of current members).

Next time, make prep instructions.

Menu

Ingredients

  • Rice flour
  • Potato starch
  • Ground pork
  • Onions
  • Chives
  • Soy sauce
  • Jijing
  • Dried Seaweed
  • Ma you
  • Vinegar
  • Squid Sauce

Pre-Event Prep
@Kenny, I don't know what you did! But magically the dough and meat was all beautiful and ready day of

During Event Instructions

  • Take dough (slightly frozen) and knead into small ball about 1 inch in diameter.
  • Use thumb to create an indent/pocket in the dough.
  • Add meat filling into pocket
  • Carefully mold the dough over the meat
  • Roll in palm until smooth and round once again
  • Place finished tangyuan on plate
  • Boil finished tangyuan in water, cook about 7 min. they should float when done
  • Serve in bowl (water/soup optional)

Event Materials

  • Bowls to hold everything
  • Pot to boil tangyuan

Comments
Required a bit more instruction to teach people how to make, but went very well. Ended with a lot of extra meat filling and ended up making them into meat pancakes.

Scallion Pancakes

Ingredients

  • Flour
  • Oil
  • Salt
  • Scallions

Pre-Event Prep

  • Wash scallions thoroughly and dice. Put aside in large bowl.
  • Mix flour and water in a bowl to create dough. Set aside.
  • Pour oil into separate bowl and set aside.
  • Sprinkle flour onto the table so that dough doesn't stick to it.

During Event Instructions

  • Take dough approx. half of the size of your fist.
  • Roll dough out into a circular disk shape.
  • Spoon on some oil and spread it over the dough. Then sprinkle in some scallions and salt.
  • Roll the dough up one ways into a cylinder, then roll the dough lengthwise of the cylinder to create a ball like shape.
  • Flatten the dough and roll it out into a circular disk once again.
  • Fry the dough in a lightly-oiled nonstick pan over medium-high heat. Fry each side for a minute or two, so that pancake is browned and crisp.
  • Serve immediately.

Event Materials

  • Rolling pin
  • Bowls to hold various ingredients
  • Pans for frying
  • Spatulas for flipping

Comments
Highly popular. Be careful not to leave pans with oil over the fire when nothing is frying! Can and will destroy nonstick pans (rip jynnie's pan 2k17). Also beware not to leave flipping spatulas on the pans over fire! They will melt!

Bubble Tea

  • Initially planned to make fruity bubble tea, but were unable to find fruit syrups at Cmart, so we opted for bubble tea*

Ingredients

  • Black tea
  • Tapioca
  • Honey
  • Sweetened condensed milk

Pre-Event Prep
Bubble tea was served done at the event.

  • Make two pots of tea (50 bags each)
  • Add condensed milk to desired taste
  • Make boba

Event Materials

  • Ladles
  • Boba straws
  • Cups
  • Pot for tea
  • Pot for boba

Comments
Make sure you have enough cups and ladles!

General Notes

  • Be careful not to leave pans with just oil over the fire. Will not only create smoke that will set off the fire alarms, but also will destroy nonstick pans.
  • Make sure you have all the materials you need! When you have boba but no cups its p sad. (thanks based Li for the clutch cups)
  • Make sure guest list is comprehensive and sent to desk beforehand. (Also, we should just have a guest list in the drive ready to go)
  • Brief exec and organize prep before hand. That way they can help instruct and prepare without panicking~
