Description

In general, it was a very successful event. A lot of people (~50) came. There are two possible causes: 1. The event is on the day of Lunar New Year and 2. An ADT rehearsal in McCormick ended soon after our event started. For some of the people who came, we were certainly sure they're not ATS members. Tony regretted not setting up a booth by the Country Kitchen's door to check/sell ATS membership before letting people enter.

We spent about $110 in total and were left with lots of extra tapioca. All the snacks and drinks were finished. Compared to the IAP Dumpling Workshop. There were a lot of dumpling-making-newbies at this event who were afraid of putting too much filling in a wrapper. Although we got the same amount of ingredients this time, wrappers ran out before dumpling fillings did. Cooking-wise, Rachel and I set up two pots with boiling water for pork and veggie dumplings, respectively. Li brought out a stove and pan and fried some dumplings (Yum!).

Taro Sweet Soup:

  • $11 - 6 cans of coconut milk from Amazon. Could probably get them cheaper at any supermarket. We also only used 5.
  • $25 - 6 lbs of small pearl tapioca from Bob's Mill on Amazon. Could definitely get them cheaper elsewhere. The recipe only called for about 1.5 lbs.
  • $1.50 - Package of rock sugar from the Super 88 Market in Allston.

Dumplings, Snacks and Drinks: We spent about $65 in total, all from the Super 88 Market in Allston.

Recipes

Pork Dumplings

(for 50~70 dumplings)

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb ground pork
  • 0.5 lb chives
  • 1 or 2 eggs
  • 160g oyster sauce
  • soy sauce

Steps:

  1. Mix oyster sauce with ground pork. If it’s not salty enough, add some soy sauce
  2. Chop chives and add it in the ground pork. If it’s hard to mix, add an egg to smooth the mixture.
  3. Make dumplings! :D

Egg and Chive Dumplings

(for 50~70 dumplings)

Ingredients:

  • 0.85 lb chives
  • 5 eggs
  • Sesame oil
  • Salt

Steps:

  1. Chop up chives and then mix them with sesame oil.
  2. Beat eggs, and then make scrambled eggs.
  3. Wait until the eggs have cooled. Add them to the chives with salt and sesame oil and mix.
  4. Make dumplings! :D

Taro Sweet Soup

We followed the taro version of this recipe and multiplied it by 4: http://www.kitchenbowl.com/recipe/luDbDIvw03/chinese-sweet-soup-dessert

  • 4 lbs of taro
  • 5 fourteen ounce cans of coconut milk
  • 1 package of rock sugar
  • 1.5 lbs tapioca (did not actually add in final recipe since we cooked it wrong)

Basic Instructions:

  1. Cook tapioca in a LOT of water until translucent. Drain and rinse with a very fine mesh strainer.
  2. Cook taro in separate pot of boiling water.
  3. When taro is soft, mix in the rock sugar until it dissolves. Remove from heat and add coconut milk and tapioca.

Other Notes

  • If a lot of people are coming, remember to check ATS membership (also time for recruitment! :D)
  • Apparently events after ADT rehearsal spikes in attendance.
  • Check if there's any tapioca left before thinking of buying it because we have a lot left.
