Event Description

Mahjong Tournament and Arts and Crafts! 7pm teaching session, 8-10pm tournament. Set up tables for crafts on one side of McCormick Dining. People can walk in at any time and begin a craft.

Arts and Crafts

  • Tissue Paper Flowers
  • Carp Kites
  • Domo Plushies
  • Riceball Plushies (tutorial)

Attendance

  • 2014: 50 people in attendance (including exec), about half of them were playing mahjong and half of them made crafts too (mostly domo plushies), exec were pretty evenly split between the two activities

Stores

Mahjong Tournament: We bought a new nontravel size mahjong set and a mahjong card set (for the newbie division) from Asian crafts store located at the intersection of Essex St & Chauncy St. We also bought Toscanini's gift cards: $20,$5,$5,$5 for the pros, and $5 for the runner up in the newbie division.

Arts and Crafts: Supplies were bought at Michael's over break. A problem that came up was that no one could find the bag of scissors and they had to be borrowed.

  • Tissue Paper flowers:
  • Carp kites:
  • Domo plushies:
  • Riceball plushies:

Notes

""Spending for this year:"" $40 Toscanini's gift cards, ~$10 Mahjong set from Asian crafts store located at the intersection of Essex St & Chauncy St.,~$45 new mahjong set (we now own 7 or 8 sets), $67.29 on food (for IAP events in general)

Mahjong Tournament: People play mahjong in different directions (clockwise / counterclockwise). We should establish a direction at the beginning (and include on teaching sheet) so that newbies (and even more advanced players) do not get confused.

We held separate tournaments, one for newbies, one for advanced players. Took the top four scores across all tables in each division to play in the final round. We had the newbies at first play 2 rounds to determine the top scorer, but they did not want to play after their long first round (so the tie was broken by best of 5 rock paper scissors). We gave the pro division around 30 minutes.

Arts and Crafts:

  • Made rice ball and domo plushie examples and carp kites several days in advance. The plushies took around 2-3 hours to make. The carp kite took around 2 hours.
  • On the day of the event, we make a sample tissue paper flower and typed up instructions for each craft. We also quickly cut out some plushie templates.
  • Both the rice ball and domo plushies were extremely popular. No one made a carp kite voluntarily. The tissue paper flowers were untouched.
