Event Description
Ready to beat that dude who just barely mahjonged you last year? Still trying to figure out the rules of the game? Or just want to watch your friends' battling tension over the table? Come to ATS's IAP Mahjong Tournament 2005! All skill levels are welcome. See who will be this year's ATS Mahjong Champion - even beginners have a stab at our Grand Prize! Refreshments will be served.
The mahjong tournament is held during IAP. We generally have a teaching session where people learn how to play, followed by the tournament itself. Entry into the tournament was free in 2007, and $3 in 2006. The prize for the past two years has been a $20 Galleria gift certificate. Three runners up each got a $5 JP licks card.
The tournament ran as follows: Everyone signed up and was randomly assigned to a table. Each table played until everyone had a chance to be dealer. The winner of each table was determined by points, and each table had a winner that moved on. There were also wildcard spots to make it a multiple of 4, also determined by points. So for example, say there were 36 people. That means there were 9 games at first, but 12 winners - one winner at each table, and 3 wildcard spots. These 12 people are then divided into 3 tables. From these three games, there are 4 winners - one from each table, and 1 wildcard spot. These people then play for the prize. All the standings were recorded on a large posterboard.
In 2007 and 2008, Chinese chess sets were placed on neighboring tables. In 2008, we also had a go set. There was never DDR at the mahjong tournament, though it has been suggested.
2008: Prizes were upped to $30 to Galleria for 1st, $15 to Fire and Ice for 2nd, $12 to AMC Loews for 3rd, $10 to Best Buy for 4th, and $10 to JP Licks for Best Newbie.
2009: Different prize system--$15 from J.P. Licks, BTS, AMC Loews, $20 from Galleria (couldn't get anything less), new mahjong set for Best Newbie. [Mahjong set was bought from Chinatown for ~$20]
2010: Gift cards from Galleria ($20), Berryline, and JP Licks. New Mahjong set for best newbie.
2011: $15 gift cards to JP Licks, Berryline, BTS
2012: 1 $20 and 2 $10 gift cards from Toscanini (only 3 prizes, but I suggest getting 4 next year)
2013: Newbie: Mahjong set; Advanced: $15 Starbucks
2014: Newbie: Mahjong card set for winner, $5 Toscanini for runner up; Advanced: $15 Toscanini for winner, 3x$5 Toscanini for all finalists

Same sort of stuff applies for booking McCormick dining as McCormick anywhere else.
Other clubs like to have mahjong events during IAP as well - please be wary when planning this event not to conflict with other similar events. 2014: Used Taiwanese style. It was a good idea to directly have final rounds (skipped semifinals) after prelims so that it did not run too long. Arts and crafts have definitely become more popular, as there were 3 tables for advanced and 2 tables for novice for prelims.
2010: Used Taiwanese style. Teaching was complicated, lots of interruptions and confused people... probably should make some posters with pictures? Definitely did NOT allow enough time for the tournament - was scheduled to go till 10, but should probably extend to 11pm next year. Chip system allowed for easier accounting!
2009: We tried Hong Kong style this year, which was easier to teach. We should probably stick with Taiwanese style though.. it's more Taiwanese :) Powerpoint for teaching session this time. I think it helped to see some things on the screen, but demos with actual tiles are really important. This year we also did a scoring system (had 2 scorers running around and scoring all the tables). There was a bit of a bottleneck with multiple tables needing scoring at the same time, so it would probably be good to have more scorers if this system is used again. Don't do this event on Superbowl Sunday in future...
2008: Jebus, this went LONG. One table kept going and going and going...for future years, it would be better to set a time limit (1 hour per round, for example) instead of "play until everyone has been dealer once". It would also make the wild card spots fairer. Need more mahjong sets!
Where are stuff now?
2014: We now have around 7 or 8 sets that are all in Walker.
2009: Bought two more sets, which are (or will soon be) in the McCloset. We still have a set from Harvard.. whoops?
2008: Borrowed 2 sets from Harvard, one from Simmons housemasters, one from Christine. ATS had 5 sets, all of which are back in the McCloset. Chinese chess sets are also back. Go set belonged to Alex.
Kenny has two mahjong sets. The ATS sets could be in the Mccormick storage closet? Simmons housemasters have a mahjong set as well, and we have borrowed from them too.
