Location and Time

Friday, January 27, 2012 in McCormick Dining from 7-10:30 pm

Event Description

Mahjong Tournament! 7pm teaching session, 8-10pm tournament We had arts and crafts as well for those who didn't want to play mahjong (but only 3 people participated in origami)

Attendance

  • 2012: Rough estimate ~30

Stores

We shopped at C-Mart, bought gift cards from Tosci's.

Notes

Spending for this year: $60 on snacks at C-Mart and one $20, two $10 gift cards at Tosci's (only 3 prizes, but I suggest getting 4 next year)

We combined this event with Arts and Crafts because the schedule for IAP was slightly messed up. We also had this on Friday for the NY trip exec took over the weekend.

Suggested plan of action when organizing this event in the future:

1) Make sure a good number of people know how to play so that they can teach. Have one legit person be the referee because I didn't know the rules :(

2) Ask around for volunteers to teach! Teaching is always slightly disorganized, and it's better with a lot of teachers than just one surrounded by a crowd of newbies.

3) We only have 7 mahjong sets but we only had 16 players so we were okay. We took a winner from each table after playing for around 45 min and had the winners table play 4 rounds.

4) You should get 4 prizes so that the 4th person isn't sad

We had the basics as a standard for everyone, with the option for individual tables to up the stakes with the advanced rules if they so desired.
