Description

This was our attempt at having an interesting fall cultural event, even though the real lantern festival doesn't really take place until the spring. Participants were given materials and decorations to make simple paper lanterns, and the lanterns were hung from a mysterious contraption created by Victor and Joe on Killian Court.

Food

  • Random assortment of Asian snacks from C-Mart, quantity dependent on remaining budget
  • Couple bottles of drinks

Materials

  • (quantity) 1. Bamboo Bow. 34" 5 Pack. (18 of these) from http://www.one-world-trading.com/kites_BuildingMaterials.shtml
  • cotton string to tie the bamboo loops
  • unknown number of __x__ sheets (or cut to fit) tissue paper of assorted colors - don't use the flimsy not-smooth kind because that disintegrates
  • gallon bottle of glue - poured into styrofoam cups
  • foam brushes (pack of 25)
  • Calligraphy brushes and ink
  • small tealights
  • fishing line
  • Instructions [1]

Attendance

Much better than expected. At one point the room was filled, so I would estimate about 30-40 in total.

Notes

  • We rearranged the tables so that they were in a more clustered shape
  • Opened food near the end so it wouldn't get dirty
  • Splash was happening at the same time, so some random kiddies came in
  • Since we waited to hoist the lanterns up at the very end, many people didn't take their lanterns home with them
