Description

ATS lantern making is a cultural event where members construct tissue paper lanterns decorated with calligraphy. We then hang their lanterns outside and enjoy the colored lantern display. The event was held in room 4-149, and the lanterns were hung on the tree directly outside of the classroom.

We didn't have to buy many supplies this year because there were many left over from the last lantern-making event.

Budget

$160 allocated; used under $60 of the budget (~$15 for tissue paper, ~$35 snacks, ~$10 hanging supplies)

Food

  • Random assortment of Asian snacks from C-Mart, quantity dependent on remaining budget
  • Couple bottles of drinks

Materials

  • bamboo circles (left over from last year)
  • glow sticks and connectors
  • cotton string to tie the bamboo loops
  • tissue paper in assorted colors (left over and also bought 100-pack off Amazon)
  • gallon bottle of glue - poured into small plates
  • foam brushes (left over)
  • calligraphy brushes and ink
  • small tealights (left over from last year, and from Nightmarket)

Hanging the Lanterns

We bought a stake (about 6') and hook to make a device to hang lanterns. To create a hanging line, we knotted together about five thinner lines of string to create a sturdy line. We made two hanging lines at different heights, each anchored by wrapping the line around a tree knot/trunk. We also created several large loops on the lines so that we could attach paper clips to the lanterns and use the stake to hook the lantern into the loop. This was easier to set up and take down than last year's system, required less materials/heavy rope, and allowed us to hang lanterns incrementally rather than waiting for everyone to finish. However, we could have been more ambitious and set up the line to be higher, but we were worried that the stake system might not work and that we would need to fall back on using chairs to hang the lanterns.

Notes

  • Started setting up system for stringing lanterns early, so people got to see their lanterns hung up before they left. Most people still did not take their lanterns home, however.
  • Set up drinks and snacks at a table in the front of the room, and let people grab as they pleased.
  • We had a limited supply of bamboo circles left over from last year, so we also used glow sticks as the circles for lanterns
