Description

ATS lantern making is a cultural event where members construct tissue paper lanterns decorated with calligraphy. We then hang their lanterns outside and enjoy the colored lantern display. The event was held in room 4-153, and the lanterns were hung on the tree directly outside of the classroom.

Since the previous year's event used most of the leftover materials, we spent over double the budgeted amount to buy new materials. We bought 50 5 packs of bamboo bows, but used only about 50 or 60 bows.

There are another 50 or 60 circles already made this year that were not used, and all materials should be in a box labeled "Lantern Making" in Walker storage.

Budget

$100 allocated; spent a total of about $300

  • $200+ on bamboo
  • $70+ on other miscellaneous supplies: tissue paper, string, tea lights, glue, ink
  • ~$10 on snacks

Food

  • Random assortment of Asian snacks from H Mart, no drinks due to being over budget

Materials

  • bamboo circles - takes about 4 hours of prep to make 100 straight bows into circles
  • cotton string to tie the bamboo loops - found leftover and used some from Grace - only purchased cooking twine this year for hanging
  • tissue paper in assorted colors
  • glue (2 16 oz bottles) - poured into small plates
  • foam brushes - used leftovers, but bought new ones which were not opened
  • calligraphy brushes and ink - used 1+ bottle of liquid ink, plus ink from calligraphy set, bought colorful ink but was left unopened
  • small tea lights - bought 4 dozen - may need to purchase more

Hanging the Lanterns

We tied string from one tree to another in Killian Court. Lanterns were then tied to the string. For future lantern making events, remember to tie loops in the string for the lanterns to be hung with paper clips.

Attendance

Around 30-35 (including exec)

Notes

Print several copies of the lantern making instructions before the event and distribute to all the tables. Remember to get a large stack of The Tech or other newspapers to cover all the tables.
