  • 2015: ~40 people in attendance (including exec), about half at each if not slightly more doing arts and crafts.

Mahjong Tournament: No new mahjong sets were bought this year. Toscanini's gift cards were tournament prizes: $10,$5,$5,$5 for the pros, and $10, $5 for the novice division.

Arts and Crafts: Supplies were bought at Michael's.

Notes

Spending: $40 Toscanini's gift cards, $27.23 on food, $42.13 on crafts supplies (after a 30% off coupon)

Mahjong Tournament: The plan was to have a short teaching session before two tournaments: one for experience players and one for novices. Also there was a switch to standard 14 tile mahjong instead of 17 tile mahjong. This did not happen since many people did not know how to score and basically all the beginners decided to leave after 1 hour. Each table ended up doing their own thing and gift cards were given out the the highest scoring players at each table. In addition, the Friday before the event, there was a mahjong teaching session with the MIT Mahjong Club in an effort to teach newcomers and exec mahjong before the event. Scoring should definitely be reconsidered and standardized. Ideally the scoring would be not too complicated (easy to teach/pick up) and not too luck based (require skill to win consistently). For example, mahjong scoring can be extremely lengthy and difficult to memorize (e.g. Chinese Official Mahjong Scoring) or can be very restrictive with many rules (e.g. Japanese Mahjong Scoring). The event captains next year will have to decide on the exact ruleset that results in a balanced game. However the more important issue was the lack of interest in mahjong which made it difficult to run an organized tournament.

Arts and Crafts: There were two events, plushie making and tissue paper flowers. We bought a really wide variety of colors of felt and tissue paper, and way too much stuffing (30+ sheets of felt, 2 bags of stuffing while one was definitely enough). The felt plushies were very customizable with different faces and different colors, and most people seemed to enjoy making them. They also took around 1-2 hours to make, which was nice. We had 30 needles and didn't run out, and five scissors that got passed around a lot. We cut templates out of paper and cardstock. Probably the largest shortage was of scissors.

Specifically, this is the link to the tutorial we used: http://hapyshoppe.blogspot.com/2013/01/how-to-make-kawaii-mochi-plushie.html

The tissue paper flowers took about 5 minutes to make, and were nice as a short and easy craft. Not that many people made them.

Miscellaneous This event was scheduled for January 24 but was moved due to the January 2015 nor'easter.

This was the first time an event was held in Simmons Dining. If there is another event in Simmons Dining, be sure to check with the Housing Manager and MIT Facilities about turning on the lights in dining. Simmons has an electrical closet on the 2nd floor that controls the lights which are usually on a timer during IAP. This year we did not know how to work the lights so we had to send a runner upstairs to override the timer every hour.

The mahjong set with dark green tiles is missing a 6 circles. Instead it has 5 of the 7 circles, one of which has a piece of tape on it indicating that it is a 6 circles.
