Description

Serve shaved ice to the Class of 2022 and try to get them to join ATS!

Volunteers

Event captain(s): Elaine Zhang, Gabriel Mintzer; Helpers: Catherine Huang, Kelvin Lu, Ben Chen,

  • Four jobs
    • Scoop and shave ice
    • Help with ice shaving and/or do first part of the toppings
    • Add toppings
    • Hand out spoons (We could not find cards this time otherwise would also be handing out cards)

Toppings List

Bought all the toppings from CMart earlier that week. Was purchased with Bobafest materials (Thanks Tony + Sarah + Charleen).

We did not prep the toppings ahead of time. Instead, during the event, we chopped up the jellies in the cans using a plastic spoon. Only issue was not having somewhere to pour excess liquid from the fruit cans.

Other Materials

  • Garbage bags (2-3)
  • Ice Shavers (2) - stored in McCormick
  • A whole cooler of ice - ice from BC
  • Cups and bowls (150-200 people)
  • A lot of spoons
  • Gloves
  • Napkins (don't pass out, but keep on hand for spills or if people ask)

Other Notes

  • Double check that the booth we get for Activities Midway has electric power cords. We didn't get one with a nearby power cord, so we had to find extra power cords to connect to a futher one. Make sure connections are covered so water doesn't ruin the cords!
  • We first filled up the cooler about halfway, but ran out of ice about 60%-70% of the way through the event. Fill up the cooler completely next time. Use multiple dorms' ice machines if necessary.
  • We served ice to about 150-200 people. We did not run out bowls or spoons.
  • Many people didn't know what Ai-yu jelly was. We just started telling them it was lemon flavored jelly.
  • Bring some sort of jar (like lychee jelly container) to pour out extra liquid from jars.
  • If we have time, make a sign listing all the toppings we have. The labels on the cans are not always clear.
  • No Leftovers
    • Probably due to the fact we gave a lot of shaved ice to other MIT students, especially towards the end.
    • Would recommend buying at least one more of each can next time. (Some cans ran out before the end of the event)
    • Be less generous, so toppings last longer?
  • THE CARDS ARE NOW IN THE STUD. KEEP THEM THERE.
